Sri Lanka have started their journey of the Super 4s stage of Asia Cup 2023 with a close 21 run victory over Bangladesh in the 2nd match of the Super 4 stage of Asia Cup 2023, which was played at Colombo. Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field first. Let’s delve into details of the match, which was played between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

After being invited to bat first, Sri Lankan openers, Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne came out in the middle to begin with the proceedings. Openers provided a stand of 34 runs in 5.3 overs, after which, Hasan Mahmud broke the stand when Karunaratne (18 off 17) was caught behind by the wicket keeper Mushfiqur Rahim. Kusal Mendis came to bat, who along with Nissanka added 74 runs for the 2nd wicket partnership. Nissanka (40 off 60) was trapped LBW by Shoriful Islam.

Sri Lanka played with a run rate around 4 in the first half. Sadeera Samarawickrama came to bat but soon, Sri Lanka were 117-3 in 25.5 overs when Mendis (50 off 73) threw away his wicket when he was caught at third man by Taskin Ahmad off the bowling of Shoriful. Charith Asalanka joined Samarawickrama in the middle. Both added 27 runs for the 4th wicket partnership buts Asalanka (10 off 23) was dismissed by Taskin Ahmad, as he was caught by Shakib ul Hasan. Sri Lanka were now 144-4 in 31.5 overs.

Dhananjaya De Silva was the new man in at the crease. Samarawickrama kept one end safe as he completed his fifty off just 45 balls, but he had very less support from the batters at the other end. De Silva (6 off 16) soon departed as he was caught behind by Mushfiqur off the bowling of Hasan Mahmud. Sri Lanka were now 164-5 in 37.1 overs. Next man in was the captain himself, Dasun Shanaka, who provided some support to Samarawickrama and added 50 runs for the 6th wicket partnership. Shanaka was clean bowled by Hasan Mahmud as they were now 224-6 in 46.4 overs.

Denuth Wellalage came at no.8 and joined Samarawickrama in the middle. Samarawickrama kept the strike mostly with himself till the end. Wellalage (3 off 3) was run out by Mahmud. Sri Lanka were now 243-7 in 48.3. Maheesh Theekshana came to bat at no. 9 but soon, he was caught behind by Mushfiqur off the bowling off Taskin Ahmed, scoring 2 off 3. Last man in was Kasun Rajitha. But Samarawickrama kept the strike with himself for the remaining over but he was dismissed  by Taskin Ahmed on the last ball of the innings. He scored a brilliant 93 runs off 72 balls.

Samarawickrama top scored with a splendid 93 off 72, followed by Kusal Mendis with 50 off 73 and Pathum Nissanka with 40 off 60. For Bangladesh, both Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud took 3-62 and 3-57 respectively. Bangladesh now had target of 258 runs in 50 overs to avenge their defeat of group stage.

In response to Sri Lanka’s target of 258, Bangladesh’s openers, Mohammad Naim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz came in the middle. Both openers provided a decent stand of 55 runs in 11.1 overs. But the Sri Lankan captain, Shanaka provided the breakthrough to his team as he dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz (28 off 29). Litton Das was the new man in the middle. Soon after, Shanaka dismissed Mohammad Naim (21 off 46) as he was caught behind by Kusal Mendis. Bangladesh were now 60-2 in 13.4 overs.

Next man in was the captain, Shakib ul Hasan himself. Bangladesh relied heavily on their captain, but he was caught behind by Mendis as Matheesha Pathirana took his all-important wicket. Shakib departed after scoring just 3 off 7. Next man in was the wicket keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim. Litton Das was the next man to go when Wellalage took his wicket. Das was caught behind after scoring 15 off 24. Bangladesh were now in all sorts of trouble at 83-4 in 18.5 overs. Next man in was Towhid Hridoy.

Mushfiqur and Hridoy started some damage control as Bangladesh lost wickets in a short span of time. Both added 72 runs for the 5th wicket partnership. But Mushfiqur (29 off 48) was dismissed by Shanaka, as he was caught at mid-off by Rajitha. Shamim Hossain joined Hridoy in the middle. Shamim (5 off 10) departed soon after being trapped LBW by Theekshana. Bangladesh were now struggling with 181-6 in 41.3 overs, needing another 77 runs in 51 balls.

Nasum Ahmed came to bat at no. 8. Towhid Hridoy was batting brilliantly but couldn’t get much support from the other end. Hridoy was dismissed on 82 off 97 by Theekshana, who trapped him LBW. Taskin Ahmed was the next man who, not long after, was also dismissed by Theekshana, again in the same very fashion by trapping him LBW. Bangladesh were now 200-8 in 44 overs. Shoriful Islam came to bat at no.10 as Bangladesh required 58 runs in the next 6 overs.

Both batsman added another 16 runs in the next 2.1 overs to keep Bangladesh’s diminishing hopes alive but Shoriful (7 off 7) was clean bowled by Pathirana. Bangladesh were now 216-9 in 46.1 overs. Hasan Mahmud came at no.11 as Bengal Tigers required 42 runs in the remaining 23 deliveries. Nasum and Mahmud kept on adding some runs but couldn’t cross the finish line as Nasum (15 off 15) was clean bowled by Pathirana with a yorker. Bangladesh were all out for 236 runs in 48.1 overs.

Towhid Hridoy top scored for Bangladesh with 82 off 97, followed by Mushfiqur Rahim with 29 off 48. For Sri Lanka, the birthday boy, Shanaka was the pick of the bowler with his 3-28. Theekshana and Pathirana also took 3 wickets each. Wallalage took 1 wicket.

Sadeera Samarawickrama was declared man of the match for his outstanding 93 of 72.
